A well designed garden room can do far more than provide extra space, and this project shows how a single standalone building can comfortably replace a home gym, entertainment space, and fully fitted bathroom without compromise.

This build was designed around one clear brief, create a space that feels serious, permanent, and usable every day. Not a summer room, not a compromise, but a proper extension of how the client lives and trains at home.

From the outside, the building is deliberately understated. Dark vertical cladding, a clean pitched roof, and glazing positioned to balance privacy with natural light allow it to sit quietly within a wooded setting. It feels intentional rather than dominant, which matters when a structure is used daily rather than occasionally.

Inside is where the project really earns its keep.

What makes a high performance garden gym actually work?

Most home gyms fail because they are treated as an afterthought. Poor acoustics, limited ceiling height, weak insulation, and inadequate power quickly turn enthusiasm into frustration.

This space was designed from day one to perform. Ceiling height was set to accommodate full movement and overhead exercises. Acoustic treatment was built into the structure to manage noise and impact. Heating, ventilation, and lighting were specified to suit long sessions rather than short visits.

The gym equipment sits comfortably without crowding, with clear circulation space and a layout that can evolve over time. It feels calm, focused, and deliberate, which is exactly what you want from a training environment.

Alongside the gym sits a fully integrated golf simulator and games area. This is not tacked on. It is proportioned correctly, with controlled lighting and finishes chosen to reduce glare and distraction. The result is a space that works equally well for training, switching off, or entertaining.

Why adding a bathroom changes how the space is used

Including a properly finished bathroom is what elevates this from a hobby space to a true living environment.

The bathroom is compact but well detailed, with high quality fittings, considered lighting, and materials that match the rest of the building. This means no trips back to the main house, no compromise on comfort, and far more flexibility in how the space is used.

It also future proofs the building. What works today as a gym and games room could easily become a studio, office, or guest space tomorrow without structural change.

The takeaway

A garden room only reaches its potential when it is designed with intent. When structure, layout, and specification are treated seriously, it stops being an add on and becomes a genuine extension of how you live. This project is a clear example of what is possible when that approach is taken from the start.
