Planning Permission and Other Considerations For Garden Salons
According to the planning portal – you do not necessarily need planning permission to work from home. Their advice is:
“If the answer to any of the following questions is ‘yes’, then permission will probably be needed:
- Will your home no longer be used mainly as a private residence?
- Will your business result in a marked rise in traffic or people calling?
- Will your business involve any activities unusual in a residential area?
- Will your business disturb your neighbours at unreasonable hours or create other forms of nuisance such as noise or smells?”
Therefore, as long as your business is not affecting the local infrastructure (parking and over crowding your neighbours), you should be fine. Technically have even an additional chair in your garden salon (for one other stylist/beauty technician) who can also work from your building, providing there is ample space for cars on driveway.
If you are in doubt you may apply to your council for a Certificate of Lawful Use for peace of mind.
Other considerations may include permission (from your mortgage lender or local council) or separate insurance to run a home business.
You will also need to check if you have to pay business rates, potential tax allowances, possible business rates and you will need to manage health and safety as you would with any other business.
